Prom almost always requires a little sewing to make a dress modest, here we added cap sleeves and Camille needed the dress hemmed and for something a little different and ot make dancing easier we decided on a High Low hem.
First we seam ripped the arm hole – as the dress has a complete bodice cap sleeves will be a breeze to simply insert.
Black fabric is incredibly hard to match but the end effect worked quite well even though the fabric used for the cap sleeve was a little shinier. We did learn from a test sleeve that the cap needed to be cut from stretchy fabric or else movement would be restricted.
First we pinned and machine sewed the cap sleeve to the inside seam.
Then we pinned the top layer of the bodice onto the cap sleeve and hand stitched it into place.
Now we have cap sleeves, note this lightning shows the difference in black fabrics – each lightning situation was different.
Next we cut the High Low hem having marked the desired length.
The overall length of the dress was too long, so the High Low led to a straight section cut off the back.
This silky fabric is quite challenging to hem, after a few practice attempts it was found that the smallest hem possible yielded better results.
The lining now stuck out the dress, so that was hemmed. We decided to hem this straight, as short as the High portion of the outer layer.
Finally we pinned and sewed the lining hem.
And now we have a small High Low hem and a dress ready for Prom!
So, what do you think ?
