Knowing my neighbor, Emily, was getting remarried I’d asked about how she was doing finding a wedding dress and how she planned to have it altered, offering to help as needed. She found a dress, had it hemmed, bustled and bought similar lace to have sleeves added. She had difficulty communicating with the seamstress who first added tiny cap sleeves, then short sleeves and finally lengthened them to the full sleeves Emily was looking for. But after all the alterations were done, Emily tried the dress on at home and spent 30 minutes looking at it in the mirror with her mother trying to figure out how to fix the problems that were left… and that’s how I was invited to help with #ModestyFixes on a Wedding Dress!
Alterations done by the Seamstress:
- Hemmed – click to see how
- Sleeves Added – click to see how
- Bustle (with modification via Safety Pin) – click to see how
Here are the fit and modesty issues that I helped fix:
- Bust resized – click to see how
- Cleavage Fix – click to see how
- Low Back Snap in Panel – click to see how
And a couple more really easy fixes (see below)
- Tuck in Back Lacing Bow
- Sew on Beaded Belt
Tuck in Back Lacing Bow: An instant easy fix was removing the “bows” created by tying the laced back up. Instead we simply knotted the end and tucked it inside the dress.
Sew on Beaded Belt: Emily had a beaded belt to wear with the dress but again did not like the bow tied in the back, so after basting the ties to the right place I cut the ribbon, tucked it in and carefully hand stitched with invisible thread the edges to the side seam of the dress.
So, what do you think ?
